Master in International Relations with the Arab and Islamic World

Introduction and aims

Advanced course aiming at developing cultural, social, economical and political relationship with the Arab and Islamic world, taking into account its specificity and diversity. The course is based on a dynamic teaching method, in partnership with specialised institutes on Arab and Islamic studies in Europe and outside Europe.

The Master provides not only specialised seminars, but also the integration of students into research programs. The research team includes specialists in various Middle Eastern fields of study such as: Political Science, International Relations, Law, Economics, and Sociology.

At the end of the course of study the graduate will be able to:

  • understand economic and social policy issues and policymaking processes in the states of the Middle East and at regional level.
  • comprehend the interaction between the political, economic, sociological and cultural dimensions of development policy with special reference to the Middle East.
  • develop knowledge of multi-lateral policy issues in the Middle East, including the evolution of global phenomena and national and sub-national responses.
  • cultivate his/hers analytical capabilities in the social sciences and to develop  appreciation of different approaches to the study of the political economy of the Middle East.
  • provide a range of current interpretations of the Middle East region’s problems and issues from different disciplinary perspectives.

The core courses offer a balanced introduction to historical and contemporary social-scientific methods and approaches to the study of Islamic traditions, cultures and societies:

  • History of the Islamic Civilisation
  • Islamic Economy
  • Introduction to Islamic Law and Civil Status
  • Magreb and Machrek: Social and Economical Landscape
  • Crisis Zones and Conflicts in the Middle East, Political
  • Economical and Social Dimension of Islamic World
